Gold Foil Blessing

In the Thai Buddhist tradition, an Ajarn or monk may gently apply a small sheet of gold leaf to a devotee’s forehead, palm, or blessed object during a blessing ceremony. This practice carries a symbolic meaning that differs from the offering of gold leaf to a Buddha image.

• Awakening Wisdom and Mindfulness
When applied to the forehead, the gold leaf symbolizes the aspiration for wisdom, clarity of mind, and freedom from delusion. When applied to the palm, it represents the cultivation of wholesome deeds and the accumulation of merit.

• Auspiciousness and Fulfilment
Gold represents purity, radiance, virtue, and blessings in Buddhist culture. The application of gold leaf expresses prayers for good fortune, harmony, and the fulfilment of wholesome aspirations.

• A Symbol of the Completion of the Blessing Ceremony
During the ceremony, the Ajarn or monk may chant sacred verses, sprinkle blessed water, and, where appropriate, incorporate the use of yantra as part of the blessing. The application of gold leaf signifies the completion of the ritual and the devotee’s reception of the blessings.
