Vesak Day

Vesak Day, also known as the Bathing Buddha Festival or Shakyamuni Buddha’s Festival, is a ceremony traditionally observed in Theravada Buddhism. Vesak refers to a month in the ancient Indian lunar calendar (approximately April or May in the solar calendar). This day holds special significance as it marks the birth, enlightenment, and entry into nirvana of the Buddha, all of which occurred on a full moon day in May. This coincidence has led generations to designate this day as Buddha’s festival, symbolizing his perfect virtue, wisdom, and blessings.

On Vesak Day, we also hold a Buddha Bathing Ceremony, where devotees bathe the holy statue of Prince Siddhartha. This ritual serves as a prayer for the Buddha’s wisdom and Dharma water, cleansing our troubled hearts and helping us attain inner purity and lightness, in addition to our worship of the Buddha.
