Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva’s Birthday
Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva’s birthday falls on the last day of the seventh lunar month. In Buddhism, the seventh month of the lunar calendar is significant for performing filial piety and good deeds, and is often referred to as the “Filial Piety Month,” “Good Deeds Month,” or “Repaying Gratitude Month.”
According to the Yulanpen Sutra, Moggallana asked the Buddha for a way to save his mother from the suffering of the hungry ghost realm. Following the Buddha’s teachings, he dedicated his merits to his mother by making offerings to the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha) on the monk self-examination day, which is the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month. The Buddha’s immeasurable merits saved all family members from past generations. This day serves to commemorate and dedicate merits so that those in this world can gain blessings and extend their lives, while those who have passed away can be reborn in the Pure Land.
To save his mother, Moggallana vowed to help all beings, especially those suffering in hell. As a result, he is revered as Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva. His “great filial piety” and “great vows” are deeply respected by people.
